FIELD: agriculture, plant selection. SUBSTANCE: system of the cytoplasmic male sterility involves three transgenes: gene of "plastid male sterility" (pms) under control of gene of "nuclear male sterility" (nms) and gene-"restorer of male fertility" (rmf). The gene pms can be an inactive gene encoding the toxic gene product or an actively expressed gene encoding the main gene product. The gene nms is under the control of anther-specific promoter and encodes the plastid-oriented polypeptide that regulates the gene pms by activation of the expression of nonactive toxic gene pms or by suppression of the expression of the main gene pms. These events result to the plastids and cells damage or their death in an anther tissue and prevent the formation of viable pollen.
