A gas sensor (5) provides a detection signal which is used to activate a switching unit (10) which controls an actuator drive (11) for operating the shut-off device. A signal transmitter unit (6) transmits the data detected by the gas sensor. The transmitter unit may be a high frequency transceiver module with a transmission power suitable for a range of 50 meters. Authorities may be alerted via a telecommunication network.
