To feed vertical extruders, and to produce solid and tubular extrusions from small fragments, the material is fed into hoppers (19,20) on one or both sides to be transferred horizontally by reciprocating fillers to the entry openings into the filling and press zone of the extruder. The material is passed through the filling opening when a press die (1) is over it, in a set charge, so that the filling and press zone (16) is filled without an overflow at the opening level which could lead to shearing or squeezing of the material between the die and the filling opening edge. With a continuous extruder, the material is fed into the press zone in a vol. which ensures that is compression is wholly within the press zone, and remains in a loose state during the feeding movements.
