<p>A spring-set, centrifugally released brake for a linear actuator 10 is provided. The brake includes a drum 38 or ring that is disposed radially outward of a shaft 28 extending from the actuator's motor 14. The brake also includes a drive plate 40 that is mounted to the shaft 28 for rotation therewith. The brake further includes a pair of brake shoes 42, 44 disposed radially outwardly of the shaft 28 and having radially outer portions disposed radially outwardly of the drum 38. Finally, the brake includes a pair of compression springs 46, 48 disposed within hollows 56, 58 in the drive plate 40. The springs 46, 48 are supported at one end by the drive plate 40 and at the other end by one of the brake shoes 42, 44. The springs 46, 48 urge the brake shoes 42, 44 radially inward when the actuator 10 is at rest and cause the radially outer portions of the brake shoes 42, 44 to engage a radially outer surface of the drum 38. Upon rotation of the shaft 28 by the actuator motor 14, a centrifugal force is imparted to the brake shoes 42, 44 and the radially outer portions of the brake shoes 42, 44 move radially outward -- disengaging from the radially outer surface to the drum -- to release the brake. <IMAGE></p> |
