PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antimicrobial agent having lower allergy, low irritation and low toxicity, capable of retaining antimicrobial power for a long period of time by including an extract of a plant of the genus Amaranthus or its ground material. SOLUTION: This antimicrobial agent contains an extract of a plant of the genus Amaranthus or its ground material. The plant of the genus Amaranthus is a kind of the family Amaranthaceae of a dicotyledon. Amaranthus caudatus L., Amaranthus cruentus L., or the like is preferably used as the plant of the genus Amaranthus. Water, a salt solution obtained by adding an inorganic salt to water, an alcohol such as ethanol, methanol or the like, its aqueous solution or a solution obtained by adding a surfactant to the solution, etc., is preferably used as an extraction for obtaining the extract. The extraction temperature is <=40 deg.C, especially preferably a room temperature or a temperature lower than it. The extraction time is preferably 2 hours to two weeks.
