A ventilation system for the excitation winding of large salient pole machines, especially with flat copper conductors, has openings made in the head (3) of the flat copper conductor (4). Should the insulation layers (5) be led up to the conductor head edge, corresponding openings are designed in the insulation layers that lie between the flat copper conductors. Thereby parallel current paths are designed for the pole clearance and the end-winding space. In the space between excitation winding and rotor yoke, additional conducting devices are installed. On the flat copper conductor are located cooling ribs 915) that pass outwards or are interrupted, that are axial or radial, that are turned into themselves at the foot or needle-shaped.
