PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the lift amount of a valve by forming the outer peripheral surface of a shim as an ascending inclined surface increased in diameter toward the upper surface side, and forming the inner peripheral surface of a recessed part as an inclined surface corresponding to the outer peripheral surface of the shim in a valve lifter constructed by fitting the shim in the recessed part formed on the upper surface. SOLUTION: A recessed part 2a is formed in the upper surface of a valve lifter 2, and a shim 3 is fitted in the recessed part 2a. The shim 3 is formed as an inclined surface 3a with an angleθin such a manner that the outer periphery is increased in diameter on the upper surface side from the lower side toward the upper side. On the other hand, the inner peripheral surface of the recessed part 2a is formed as an inclined surface increased in diameter toward the upper side to correspond to the inclined surface 3a of the shim 3. Thus, with the shim 3 fitted in the recessed part 2a, the upper surface side can be increased in diameter more than the diameter of the conventional shim 3, so that in the case where the cam width is the same as before, the cam travel amount can be increased so that the cam shaft operating angle and the valve lift can be increased more than before.
