PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semi-transmissive reflection type liquid crystal device capable of performing transmission type display not to be inverted without damaging the brightness of reflection type display. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal device is at least provided with a first absorption type polarizing plate 101, a liquid crystal cell composed by holding a liquid crystal composition between a pair of substrates provided with a transparent electrode, a first reflection type polarizing plate 107, a second absorption type polarizing plate 108 and back lights 109 and 110 and they are arranged in the order. In this case, the first reflection type polarizing plate 107 is provided with a function for transmitting >=5% and <=45% of light vibrating in a prescribed reflection axis direction, reflecting the other light and transmitting the large part of the light vibrating in a direction orthogonal to a reflection axis and the reflection axis of the first reflection type polarizing plate 107 is orthogonal to the absorption axis of the second absorption type polarizing plate 108. |
