Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon chlorides are prepared by the reaction of the corresponding mono- or poly-alcohol, especially those of formula R<1>R<2>CH-OH (I), with phosgene or thionyl chloride, in the presence of a hexa-substituted guanidinium halide (II) or its hydrohalide, optionally grafted to a silica-based support to form (III). R<1> and R<2> = H or 1-30C aliphatic groups which may be substituted and may be unsaturated, 3 - 12C cycloaliphatic groups that may be substituted and may be unsaturated, 1- 30C alkoxy that may be substituted and may be unsaturated, aryl or aryloxy, that may be substituted, or R<1> and R<2> together form a 3 - 12C cycloaliphatic group that may be unsaturated and may be substituted R<3> - R<8> = 1 - 12C alkyl or 5 - 6 C cycloalkyl, optionally substituted, R<13> = 2 - 10C alkylene, A = Cl, Br, HCl2 or HBr2.
|
