In a method for extracting an average current, an on-pixel calculating unit calculates the ratio of on-pixel corresponding to pixels turned ON among pixels contained in a display panel on the basis of gamma information corresponding to image information. A maximum current information providing unit provides information on a maximum current corresponding to a dimming level. An average current calculating unit calculates an average current of the display panel on the basis of the on-pixel ratio and the maximum current information. A pixel information providing unit provides information on a pixel average current for each pixel which is determined by the average current of the display panel. The method for extracting an average current according to embodiments of the present invention provides information on a pixel average current for each pixel on the basis of the average current of the display panel, thereby compensating the degradation of the display panel.
