A method for producing a methyl methacrylate based polymer comprising a polymerization step wherein a monomer containing methyl methacrylate in an amount of 80 % or more and a radical polymerization initiator represented by formula (III) are fed into a reaction vessel and wherein a polymerization is carried out at a temperature of 110 DEG C to 160 DEG C, with the proviso that a concentration of the polymerization initiator and a temperature of the polymerization satisfy a specific relationship, a feeding step wherein a reaction mixture taken from the reaction vessel is fed to a volatile matter removing step, and a volatile matter removing step wherein a volatile matter is separated and removed from the reaction mixture. The method can be used for providing a methyl methacrylate based polymer having a satisfactorily excellent optical characteristics and a plastic optical fiber exhibiting excellent performance of transmittance.
