A fibre reinforced composite fastener has an integral head and shank and is tapered between them. The fastener is formed by spirally winding superimposed composite sheets including reinforcing fibres, pref. parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fastener. Pref. the sheets are of thermosetting or thermoplastic resin and of different sizes positioned mostly at the head end. Also claimed is at least two members (40, 42, 44) with aligned openings (45) and joined by two such fasteners (36, 38) whose heads are on opposite sides of the openings in the article. Also claimed are methods of making the fastener and joining members using the fasteners.
