PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the configuration of each terminal equipment building an ATM-LAN by eliminating the need of the conventionally used special equipment having the LES function by managing the VPIs/VCIs in the ATM-LAN. SOLUTION: In a system and method for acquiring identifier in ATM-LAN, communication identifiers which are VPIs/VCIs are managed without using any special device by making VPI/VCI managing functions 200 to hold management tables for managing the VPIs/VCIs in all terminal equipment connected to an ATM-LAN 300 which is a transmission line through which ATM cells are made to flow and the consistency of the VPI/VCI management table held by each terminal equipment is secured by transmitting a call request to the ATM-LAN 300 by using a multiaddress signal and acquiring the VPI/VCI used by the incoming-side terminal equipment and informing all terminal equipment connected to the ATM-LAN 300 of the acquired VPI/VCI on the management table, and then, informing the calling terminal equipment of a communication identifier which is the VPI/VCI.
