The invention concerns a method for treating a composition based on cerium oxide or a mixture of cerium oxide and zirconium oxide to increase said composition oxygen-storing capacity. Said method is characterised in that it consists in subjecting a composition containing at least one impurity such as carbonate, chloride, sulphate, oxalate or citrate, at least 0.1 % in content, to a thermal treatment at a temperature of at least 600 DEG C, in the presence of oxygen.
