A process for the production of an initiator composition (I) containing (A) an organoalkali metal and (B) an organoaluminum compound comprises homogeneously mixing the organometallic compounds dissolved in an inert hydrocarbon and allowing the mixture to mature at 0-120 deg C for at least 2 minutes. An Independent claim is included for a process for the anionic polymerization of monomers in the presence of the initiator (I).
