The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for controlling the ignition and status of an electrodeless plasma lamp (L) for UV or visible light, which plasma lamp is excited by means of a microwave generator (M). According to the invention, a signal (s) related to the excitation voltage of the microwave generator is sensed, its derivative (s') is determined, and at least the derivative of the signal is compared with a pattern (S3) established in advance which is characteristic of a change in the ignition status of the lamp. On the basis of this comparison, the status of the lamp (L) is classified as being ignited or out.
