摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the roughness-free, high-contrast liquid crystal display device with superior all-directional field angle characteristics which has liquid crystal areas wherein liquid crystal molecules are oriented axially symmetrically uniformly by pixel areas even when the screen is large. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 40 is held between a couple of substrates 32 and 34. On the surfaces of the substrates 32 and 34 which come into contact with the liquid crystal 40, transparent electrodes 31 and 33 are formed of ITOs respectively and on at least the transparent electrode 31, a projection part 36 is formed of a conductive material in contact with the transparent electrode 31. Further, vertical orientation layers 38a and 38b are formed thereupon. When an axially symmetrical orientation centering voltage is applied, areas showing axially symmetrical orientation are prescribed by projection parts 36. Therefore, the liquid crystal molecules 42 are oriented axially symmetrically about the axially symmetrical orientation center axis 44 in the pixel area prescribed by the projection parts 36. This is used suitably specially for a large-sized liquid crystal display device suitable for the application to a high quality television such as HDTV and a display for CAD.
