Optical switching network

The network uses a matrix of integrated optical switches, each with 2n inputs and outputs, where 2n is the number of inputs and outputs to be connected without blocking. The network has integrated optical coupling elements in switching stages connected in cascade to form a matrix. The inputs of coupling elements (18') in an input stage can be connected to inputs of the switching network. These coupling elements' outputs can be connected to the inputs of middle stage coupling elements (18''), whose outputs can be connected to the inputs of output stage coupling elements (18'''), whose outputs are connected to the switching network outputs. The coupling elements contain optical switching elements integrated into a switching matrix. The input, middle and output stage coupling elements form an identical switching matrix with 2n inputs by 2n outputs, where 2n is the number of inputs and outputs to be connected without blocking.
