The invention concerns a photosensitive matrix sensor comprising a caesium iodide Csl faceplate (6) mounted on a graphite base (7) for transforming high frequency radiation, X-rays, and low frequency radiation, in the visible spectrum. It is demonstrated that if the Csl is increased on such a graphite base a sensor with much better resolution and much better sensitivity is obtained than if a gadolinium oxysulphide scintillator is used. Moreover, precautions for preparing graphite can be taken which consist in making the graphite surface denser. Thus it can be coated with an amorphous carbon layer (8) and be subjected to impregnation (11). Said densification contributes towards providing the sensor with homogeneity. The Csl is then protected by means of a synthetic resin layer (16) associated with a liquid resin layer (17) for optical coupling with a detector (2).
