PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coated paper with low tackiness in wet state and excellent in sizing effect, and to provide a method for producing the coated paper. SOLUTION: This coated paper is such one that a coating layer containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol bearing silyl group in the molecule is borne on the surface of a cellulose-based paper 1-30 wt.% in silica content and 30-45 g/m<2> in basis weight, wherein the average particle size of the silica is 3-15μm and the density of the coating layer 0.05-1.0 g/m<2> , and the modified polyvinyl alcohol is a saponified product of a copolymer from vinyl acetate and a vinyl alkoxysilane. This coated paper is produced by coating a substrate paper with a surface sizing liquor for paper containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol resin bearing intramolecular silyl group at a coating rate of 800-2,000 m/min followed by drying the resultant substrate paper at >=80 deg.C.
