PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject product remarkably reduced in brittleness and having a good tooth-polishing effect, because teeth are brought into contact with the pet food for a long time, when the pet food is chewed by a pet, by mixing a gelatinized matrix with a wetting agent and insoluble fibers. SOLUTION: This pet food comprises (A) a denaturated protein source, (B) a gelatinized carbohydrate source, (C) insoluble fibers (preferably pure cellulose fibers) and (D) a wetting agent (preferably glycerol) in an amount sufficient for lowering the brittleness of the matrix. The components A, B, C and D are preferably contained in amounts of >=25 wt.%, 20-65 wt.%, 2-15 wt.%, and 0.5-5 wt.%, respectively. The carbohydrate source is preferably grains such as corns. The density of the objective product is preferably 250-320 kg/m<3> . The product is preferably obtained by an extrusion gelatinization method. Therein, a dry raw material mixture comprising the protein source, the carbohydrate, the component C, etc., is preferably mixed with water, and subsequently mixed with the component D in an extruder. |
