PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a point of time when variation is effected from ascent and descent of slope control to ordinary control according to the feeling of a user, in an automatic transmission for a vehicle to suppress the execution of a busy shift by effecting ascent and descent of slope control and operating engine brake. SOLUTION: The force (the drive force) to drive a vehicle by drive wheels is calculated by a drive force calculating part 24. Meanwhile, a running resistance calculating part 30 calculates running resistance of a vehicle at a current point of time. At a point of time when the drive force approximately coincides with running resistance, or at a point of time when a change amount of a difference between a drive force and running resistance is reduced to zero, controls is varied from ascent and descent of slope control to ordinary control.
