Electrically operated parking brake for vehicle

A parking brake for a vehicle is operated electrically via a control (2) and by connection to the main battery (8) of the vehicle. The control system monitors the effectiveness of the main battery and switches the brake control to a backup battery (9) if the main battery fails, or drops below a preset standard. The monitoring system measures the charge level, acid level, charge handling etc. of the main battery. The backup battery has an operating life similar to that of the vehicle and can be a lithium type of battery and is rechargeable. If the backup brake is also faulty the system operates a warning indicator for the driver.
