The invention relates to a method of optimizing, within an area (R) which itself contains a number of part areas (A, B, C), the coverage of a sensor which has an angle-dependent range in at least one plane, and which sensor is in addition arranged on a mobile platform. The method comprises determining at least two movement directions ( alpha , beta ) for the sensor platform, determining a centre of movement (x0, y0; Lc) for said two movement directions, and also determining periods of time (L alpha , L beta ) during which the sensor platform is to move in each of said two movement directions. The centre of movement of the platform is preferably located within the search area.
