PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing the subject compound in high yield and selectivity, and good productivity while suppressing the consumption of nitrous oxide and the formula of by-products by oxidizing an aromatic compound by using the nitrous oxide as an oxidizer and using a specific modified zeolite as a catalyst. SOLUTION: A heterogeneous catalyst composition modified so as to have a strong Lewis acid-base bond center, and containing silica-enriched five vertices- type zeolite is obtained by heating a zeolite in a first fluidizing gas at 350-550 deg.C for 4-6 hr, further firing the heated zeolite in a successive gas flow of a second gas at 550-1,100 deg.C for 1-3 hr to carry out pre-activating treatment of the catalyst, and cooling the zeolite catalyst to a reaction temperature. A monocyclic aromatic compound is reacted with nitrous oxide by using the obtained heterogeneous catalyst composition at 225-500 deg.C to provide the objective compound having one more hydroxyl than the monocyclic aromatic compound in the method for preparing a hydroxylated aromatic compound. The method is preferably applied to the preoparation of a phenol (derivative) from a benzene (drivative). |
