The invention relates to the use of carboxylic acid or CO2 in the production of a pharmaceutical or cosmetic preparation for topic application in order to stabilize or improve epidermal synthesized ceramide. The epidermal permeability barrier is improved and transepidermal water loss is reduced. The preparation is also suitable for the prevention or treatment of atopic dermatitis (neurodermatitis).
