PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively and efficiently obtain the subject compound useful as a intermediate raw material for a developer for photography, an analyzing reagent, a medicine, an agrochemical, etc., by reacting a specific tetrahalocyclohexanone with a lactone and an alkali. SOLUTION: The 2,2,6,6-tetrahalocyclohexanone of the formula (X is a halogen) (e.g. 2,2,6,6-tetrachlorocyclohexanone, 2,2,6,6-tetrabromocyclohexanone or the like) is reacted with a lactone (e.g.β-propiolactone,γ-butyrolactone or the like) in the molar ratio of preferably 4.0-20.0 and an alkali of the formula MOH (M is an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal) [e.g. KOH, Be(OH)2 or the like] in the molar ratio of preferably 4.0 at the reflux temperature of a solvent under atmospheric pressure or higher than it to give pyrogallol.
