The invention relates to an electromechanical brake system, especially for motor vehicles, comprising a pedal simulator (1) and brake modules (7). A central module (6) is also provided. The connection between said modules can be provided by a data bus (5). The central module (6) evaluates the braking request signals from a sensor device (3) and checks for errors. The central module (6) also supplies an appropriate desired braking value based on the braking request and possibly other higher-level factors such as the anti-skid brake system and the traction slip control system. The desired braking value is conveyed to the brake modules (7). The brake modules (7) then determine the appropriate control signals for the actuators (8) which interact with the wheels (9) in order to fulfil the driver's braking request.
