The automated configuration, access control and cost calculation commences with introduction of a smart card (9) into a reader at a terminal (8) on a network (1-7). The user then selects the application, and initiates an automatic procedure to read parameters from the access card. A registration database is then automatically searched, and if the access is allowed the application initiated.
