PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the polarizing device and projection type display device which obtain high-luminance polarization lighting. SOLUTION: A light source part 1, a 1st lens plate 2 which splits the source light emitted by the light source part 1 into pieces of luminous flux determined by the apertures of lenses 2a, a 2nd lens plate 3 which has lenses 3a where the lenses 2a constitute bright points respectively, a prism lens array 4 which receives incident light emitted from the bright points of the lenses 3a and consists of PBS(polarization beam splitter) 5 and a reflecting prism 6, and a 1/2-wavelength plate 7 which is arranged on the projection surface of the prism array 4 and converts the P or S polarized light exiting from the prism array 4 into the other polarized light are provided; and light which exits from a bright point on a lens 3a to impinge on the PBS 5 adjacent to the reflecting prism 6 and is reflected by the polarized light separation part 5a of the PBS 5 is made incident on the reflecting prism 6 and reflected by the total reflecting mirror 6a of the reflecting prism 6 to exit, and the 1/2-wavelength plate 7 is different in arrangement style between the area corresponding to the nearly center part of the 2nd lens plate 3 and the area other than the center part. |
