PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove water-soluble or water-insoluble malodorous substances included as mixed in the objective substance in one treating process by converting the water-insoluble malodorous substances in the objective material containing water-soluble malodorous substances and water-insoluble malodorous substances into water-soluble substances by a catalyst and then removing by washing. SOLUTION: When the objective gas 1 containing malodorous substances which are insoluble with water and do not decompose by treatment with a deodorizing catalyst is treated, the malodorous substances are converted into water-soluble substances by using a conversion catalyst 3, and then the malodorous substances are removed by washing 4. As for the conversion catalyst 3, a Co-Al2 O3 catalyst is used for higher aldehydes, a Mn-Co based catalyst is used for thiols and dialkylsulfide, and a Pt-based catalyst is used for higher esters. If the objective material contains water-soluble substances and water- insoluble substances, a washing process may be carried out before the catalytic deodorizing process to preliminarily remove the water-soluble malodorous substances so as to decrease the load on the catalyst. |
