PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the degree of separation between pixels. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with an active matrix substrate 1 arranging a switching transistor in each pixel electrode 15, a counter substrate 17 opposed to the substrate 1 and liquid crystal 19 held between both the substrates 1, 17 and constituted so that the upper surface of the pixel electrode 15 has a practically flat surface, the upper surfaces of all the pixel electrodes 15 form the same plane, an insulating member forming a pixel electrode separating area 16 and brought into contact at least with a part of the side of the electrode 15 is formed in a gap between adjacent electrode 15 and the height level of the upper surfaces of the electrodes 15 is made different from that of the member 16 on their boundary.
