Correcting offset of position data of navigation system for motor vehicle

The method comprises determining the relative distance between a distance sensor (1) mounted in the vehicle (9) and a significant object (10) located ion the range of the sensor. The detected distance value is compared with the distance value output by the navigation system (7) based on the object position data provided to it. A correction value (8) derived from the difference is used to correct the navigation system position data. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for the above process.
