PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tire testing apparatus in which the complicatedness in terms of the structure of hardware is reduced quickly to a minimum and in which a computing operation and an evaluating operation can be performed. SOLUTION: A tire testing apparatus comprises an air pressure means which changes the tire pressure of a wheel, a test head 16 and a computer. The computer generates interference photographs on the surface of a tire 11 by coherent light before and after an air pressure is changed. The interference photographs are converted in modulo 2πimages. A part of the modulo 2πimages is processed so as to generate gray-value images. By comparing the gray-value images, information about a defect existing in a tire is obtained. In addition, the tire testing apparatus comprises a test-head positioning means which positions the test head 16 so as to generate an interference photograph in a place at a prescribed distance from the tire and a control means which turns the wheel by an increment size equal to a test division when the inspection of a preceding test division is completed.
