Halogenated triphenylmethanesulfonates are used for dyeing keratinous fibers, especially human hair. Halogenated triphenylmethanesulfonates of formula (I) are used for dyeing keratinous fibers, especially human hair: R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4> = H,Cl. Br or OH; R<5>, R<6>, R<7>, R<8> = H, Cl or Br; x = H, alkali(ne earth) metal or ammonium. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a color composition containing (I); and (b) a method of coloring using (I).
