Meat etc. is fed to the knife unit (2,4) by a double helix pair of screws (7) rotating round axes normal to the knife unit. One sector (18,19) of the rim area of each screw spiral (20) is supported on its allotted sector (21) of the housing wall (22) surrounding the screw, preferably at the screw end facing the knife unit (4) and the screw shaft facing the unit is centrally bored to take its radial bearing here designed as a sleeve round a bearing bolt thrusting directly or indirectly off the machine housing. In one of the housing endfaces where it confronts the screws, the housing is fitted with a removable reducing insert (14) forming the transition from the oval end of the housing outlet at the screw end region and the rectangular entry section of the knife unit (4). The span (17) of the knife unit at most equals the screw center axis interval, or in a variant the span is one screw shaft diameter less than this interval.
