An inverter system comprises an input transformer 3 or transformers (31-33 Figs 8-12, 24 and 25) having secondary windings 3S and inverter units 4U, 4V, 4W connected in series at n stages to compose respective phases and supply electric power to a load 5, such as a motor. A further aspect relates to a three phase inverter (41, Fig 6) and a plurality of single phase inverters (4U2-4W3). A still further aspect relates to protecting the inverter system (Figs 27,33-40) by operating a bypass switch (A11) so as to control a fuse (A4) when both of an operating abnormality (A14) and a DC abnormality (A13) are detected. The inverter may use IGBT or GTO devices and PWM control is described. The transformer winding layout is described (Fig 31). |
