<p>A method of operating a movable hearth furnace wherein a layer comprising a mixture of oxides such as powdery iron ore and a powdery solid reducing material is piled on a hearth moving horizontally and the oxides are reduced by radiation heat transfer from the upper part of the hearth, characterized in that the product obtained by the reducing treatment is melted before it reaches a discharge port and a slag component in the reduction product is aggregated and separated. When a layer comprising a mixture of a powdery iron ore and a powdery solid reducing material is piled on a movable hearth moving horizontally and the powdery iron ore is reduced by radiation heat transfer from the upper portion of the hearth, first a powdery coal char is piled prior to piling of the mixture layer on the hearth and the product obtained by the reducing treatment of the mixture is melted at least once on the hearth. A mixture containing a powdery iron ore and a powdery solid reducing material is dispersed in small divisions on a movable hearth through a powdery solid reducing material to avoid direct contact with the hearth, and the reduced iron is melted on the hearth. </p> |
