The system described automatically invokes, without a request by a user 302, a computational resource 308 which may search across a network or may itself be accessed via a network. A base application 304 accepts user inputs and an agent 306 determines a context from these. A dynamically constructed instruction then invokes the resource. In one embodiment the application is an expert system for diagnosing faults in an apparatus such as a copier, in response to user input of symptoms, and the resource is a remote database which is queried automatically to provide context-sensitive access to technical manuals. In other embodiments the application is a spreadsheet, word-processor or document-browser program and the resource provides supplementary information or help documents. |
