PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation in driving margins by the growth of the reverse domains generated in pixel spacings into the pixels with a liquid crystal element which has bistability and executes multiplexing driving by fixing the liquid crystals in regions enclosing the pixels to perpendicular alignment. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal molecules in the regions enclosing the pixels of the liquid crystal element for multiplexedly driving chiral smectic liquid crystals and chiral nematic liquid crystals exhibiting the bistability are fixed by perpendicular orientation. In this production process, a substrate which is first formed with an alignment control film 23 and is subjected to an alignment treatment, such as rubbing treatment, is partially subjected to a laser annealing treatment 24. As a result, the regions subjected to this laser annealing treatment 24 loses the alignment regulation force formed by rubbing, etc., and perpendicular alignment treated regions 3 are formed. The liquid crystal molecules in the perpendicular alignment treated regions 3 are fixed to the perpendicular alignment and the liquid crystal molecules in the other regions are eventually subjected to the alignment regulating force formed by the rubbing treatment, etc. |
