The invention is characterised in that the system essentially comprises a coded marking (16) on the road, an on-board device for sensing (18) the coded marking, and an on-board computer (20) for calculating the engine torque Cm to be applied to a torque motor (46) arranged in the steering column (22). Said computing device (20) calculates a reference input line variation epsilon c which is compared to a measured line variation epsilon m to calculate a reference input turning angle alpha c. The computing of the Cm torque is a function of the difference between alpha c and a measured value alpha m. The invention is applicable to public transport vehicles for coming alongside a platform.
