The invention concerns a control system for a slide bearing for a hydrostatically mounted roll for a paper processing machine. The roll is mounted with its shaft 3 in a bearing of housing 4 by means of hydrostatic bearing elements 10, 20, 30, 40 loadable hydraulically and operating in opposite directions in two transverse planes relative to each other running through shaft 3. The bearing element is provided with bearing shoes 13, 23; 33, 43 installable around the neck of roll shaft 3 to support the roll 1 rotatably with respect to the bearing housing. The bearing shoes 13, 23; 33, 43 loaded in opposite directions in the same plane are in each case coupled to a hydraulic valve 50, 60 which is arranged to distribute the hydraulic medium pressure to the corresponding oppositely directed bearing shoes so that between the oppositely directed shoes 13, 23; 33, 43, regardless of the external load to which roll 1 is exposed, forced equilibrium occurs to keep the roll in the intended position relative to bearing housing 4. <IMAGE>
