A surfactant is added in amounts of 0.01-5 wt % to an electrolyte for a lithium ion battery comprising a lithium salt dissolved in an organic solvent mixture. An Independent claim is also included for a lithium ion battery containing the above electrolyte, especially a battery containing a positive electrode made of a lithium composite oxide, a negative electrode of carbon material, and a surfactant-modified electrolyte as above.
