The invention relates to an apparatus (1) for applying a layer of liquid covering material, which then at least partly cures, onto containers (4) for plants (11) at least partially filled with culture material, comprising: positioning means for placing the containers (4) for processing into a processing position; closing means for covering on the top the container (4) present in the processing position; and supply means for supplying the covering material to the space between the closing means and the upper surface of the culture material. As a result of these measures the pot (4) or other form of container for the culture material is closed on the top side during application of the covering material, so that spillage is prevented as far as possible.
