With regard to a control device for a variable speed gear, a gearshift element, a selector element, an element mounted mobile in an exclusively axial direction relative to a housing, an auxiliary mechanism for converting a rotary motion into a reciprocating motion, a brake connected to the speed selecting element, as well as a locking device that can be engaged and disengaged are operatively linked in such a way that two of the three aforementioned elements are mounted so as to rotate together with the housing or so as to remain axially static. A fixed locking device can be provided for the variable speed gear, either single or combined with a device for locking gear changing, used as a brake and a lock-up mechanism.
