PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease irregularity in the threshold and to improve crosstalk failure due to partial inversion in simple matrix driving, by preliminarily depositing neutral molecules and/or ionic molecules on the surface of at least one orientation controlling film. SOLUTION: Electrodes 2, 2a are formed on a pair of substrates 1, 1a, respectively, and an orienting film 3 comprising an orientation controlling film subjected to, for example, uniaxial orientation treatment, is formed on one electrode, while an orienting film 4 comprising an orientation controlling film without uniaxial orientation treatment is formed on the other electrode. The substrates 1, 1a are disposed with the orienting films 3, 4 facing to each other, and a liquid crystal material 6 is injected between the substrates. Moreover, neutral molecules and/or ionic molecules 5 are deposited on the surfaces of the orienting films 3, 4. Or, molecules 5 may be deposited on only the surface of the orienting film 3 and not deposited on the surface of the orienting film 4. Thereby, the obtd. liquid crystal element shows improved uniformity in switching characteristics. |
