A potted electrical component or subassembly has, next to the component, a coating of flexible resin and around this a casting of rigid resin. The potting process comprises two stages. The first stage is to coat the component with a plastic material which is sufficiently flexible to stretch and contract without cracking to conform to variations of the size of the component with temperature, suitable materials being co-polymers of polyesters and ethoxylenes with the addition of di-ethylene-triamine. The second stage is to cast or mould plastic material chosen for its insulating and sealing properties, e.g., a low pressure polyester casting resin produced by cross linking a polyester with a monomeric styrene, or an epoxy resin resulting from condensation with cross linking triggered by an amine, or polyurethanes, or co-polymers of ethoxylenes and thiocol.
|
