The system includes a control and regulation unit (3) which is capable of operation in two modes. In the first mode of operation the unit operates with an input signal which is measured (VAL) or calculated (VAL1) representing the user's required speed, and a measured or calculated value from a sensor (12) representing the actual vehicle speed. In the second mode of operation the unit operates with the sensor speed input signal (VAL3) and a memorised reference value of speed (VAL4). An output signal (S) is produced which controls the operation of a single actuator (8) which controls the displacement of the accelerator pedal. The pedal is operated until the measured speed value attains the predetermined value identified according to the mode of operation. |
