Method of equalizing an electric signal derived from an optical signal

The method involves determining signal quality (Q) of the equalised output signal. At least one set of equalisation parameters are determined as a function of two or more arbitrary interference parameters which characterise the distortion on which the equalisation is based, e.g. polarisation mode dispersion. The distortion parameters and thus the equalisation parameters are varied until the signal quality of the equalised output signal is optimised. An electrical equalisation circuit is provided carrying out the method and an optical receiver uses the electrical equalisation circuit.
