An electromagnetic relay with a thermomagnetic core (3) running through a coil (2) and having two pole ends (4,5) which are bridged by a movable armature (6). The armature forms a variable working air gap (42,52) with at least one pole surface (41,51) of one of the pole ends (4,5). The armature (6) has a number of mutually movable part-zones (61- 65) with which it forms a wedge-shaped air gap (42,52) opposite at least one pole surface (41,51). Starting from a partial zone with the smallest air gap spacing to the pole surface up to a contact actuating part zone (64), each subsequent part zone is elastically pre-stressed relative to the preceding part zone around an additional spacing further away from the pole surface (41,51).
